Below are directions to parks and locations we frequently use for our outings. For activities at locations not listed here, we will provide those directions directly to you prior to the day of the outing.

Boyce Park
Directions to Boyce Park, Silver Beaver Pavilion:

  1. Take the I-376 EAST ramp towards MONROEVILLE.
  2. Take the PA-48 NORTH exit, exit number 14B, towards PLUM.
  3. Merge onto HAYMAKER RD/PA-48. Follow the ORANGE Belt
  4. PA-48 becomes HAYMAKER RD.
  5. Bear right onto CENTER RD. Follow signs for Boyce Park, pass the main entrance and go to the bottom of the hill. Follow the signs for Tennis court, Base fields and Basketball courts.
  6. Turn RIGHT onto PA-380/SALTSBURG RD. Your still on the ORANGE Belt.
  7. Continue on PA-380 approx. 2 miles to Stop sign.
  8. Turn RIGHT onto New Texas Rd.
  9. Make first RIGHT into the park and follow signs to the Silver Beaver pavilion.

Deer Lakes Park

  1. Take PA-28 NORTH to exit 12 Cheswick.
  2. Turn RIGHT off ramp.
  3. Go to 4-way intersection and turn RIGHT.
  4. At about two miles you will go through a tunnel. (There is a STOP sign at the tunnel.)
  5. Go about two miles to the next STOP sign. (in Russellton)
  6. Continue straight through Stop sign to the next intersection (look for bank and small shopping plaza).
  7. Park behind the Laurel Savings Bank in the lot for the Family Dollar store.

Dorseyville (Alternate Location for Thursday Mountain Bike Rambles)

  1. Take PA-28 to exit 5 Etna/Butler/PA-8 NORTH.
  2. Take PA-8 NORTH to third stop light.
  3. Turn right onto Saxonburg Rd.
  4. Continue 3.4 miles to the 2nd stop sign (JD's Pub is on the far Right - great food).
  5. Continue straight on Saxonburg Rd. to the Dorseyville Firehall.
  6. Turn left on Charles St. and park on the right in the gravel/grass parking lot BEHIND the firehall. Please don’t park in the front lot.

Fox Chapel (Mountain Bike Rides)

  1. Take Route 28 to exit 8 for Fox Chapel Rd.
  2. Turn left (North) on Fox Chapel Road (away from River and Freeport Road) Pass under Route 28. Proceed past Squaw Run Park (on your right) Proceed past Delafield Road (on your left).
  3. Take the next left onto Squaw Run Road (angled - uphill road on a curve) - use caution.
  4. Once on Squaw Run Road, proceed through the intersection of Gayasuta Rd. and Field Club Rd.
  5. The washed out soccer field now on your left is McCahill Field.
  6. Park on the left just past the McCahill field.

Frank Curto Park

From Oakland:

  1. Take Bigelow Boulevard through intersection with Heron Avenue and look for turnoff on your right.
  2. Continue past Heron Ave. slowly about 1/2 mile and turn right into the turnoff at the orange posts, before you reach the modern art sculpture.
From Downtown:
  1. Take Bigelow Boulevard from Civic Arena toward Oakland. Notice Frank Curto park on your left, especially the turnoff point once you pass the modern art sculpture. (no way to turn in from this direction)
  2. Turn right at Heron Avenue.
  3. Turn around and head back downhill to Bigelow Boulevard.
  4. Turn left on Bigelow Boulevard and continue slowly about 1/2 mile until you see a turnoff at the orange posts, before you reach the modern art sculpture.

Frick Park

  • To Regent Square tennis courts (Mountain Bike Rides):
    From Rt. 376E, exit at Edgewood and bear left onto Braddock Ave. Continue through 2 stoplights and park in the lot on your left next to the clay tennis courts. – From Squirrel Hill, take Forbes Ave. to junction with Braddock Ave. and turn right. Go ~200 yards and park on left in lot next to tennis courts.

  • To Frick Park Environmental Center (Tuesday Nature Walks):
    From Rt. 376, exit at Squirrel Hill. (From 376W, then take first left.) At the first intersection, turn right onto Forward Ave. Turn left on Beechwood Blvd. Follow Beechwood until you see the Frick Nature Center on your right. Park there and look for the Venture Outdoors banner by the Nature Center.

  • To Beechwood and Nicholson Entrance:
    From Rt. 376, exit at Squirrel Hill. (From 376W, then take first left.) At the first intersection, turn right onto Forward Ave. Turn left on Beechwood Blvd. Park at the intersection of Nicholson St. and look for the Venture Outdoors banner.

Harrison Hills Park

  1. Take PA-28 NORTH.
  2. Take the exit, exit number 16, towards Freeport.
  3. Turn RIGHT off the ramp.
  4. Make next RIGHT onto FREEPORT RD.
  5. Go about 1 mile…park entrance is on the left. For MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES, park in the YMCA parking lot on the right.

Hartwood Acres

To Concert Area:

  1. Take PA-28 to exit 5 Etna, PA-8 NORTH.
  2. Take PA-8 NORTH approx. two miles to the third traffic light (Eat-n-Park at intersection).
  3. Turn right onto Saxonburg Road.
  4. Make immediate left onto Middle Road.
  5. Go about 4 miles, Hartwood is on your right.
  6. There is parking just past the Concert area on the right.
To Thursday Mountain Bike Rambles meeting area:
  1. Take PA-28 to exit 5 Butler/PA-8 NORTH.
  2. Take PA-8 NORTH to third stop light.
  3. Turn right onto Saxonburg Rd.
  4. Continue 3.4 miles to the 2nd stop sign (JD's Pub is on the far Right - great food).
  5. Turn left on Hart’s Run Rd.
  6. Continue to next Stop sign and turn Right onto Middle Road .
  7. Continue past the Concert area of Hartwood Acres to the elementary school on the right next to the park. Park in unpaved parking lot.

Highland Park

From Rt. 28:

  1. Cross Highland Park Bridge in right lane and make first left onto Hill Rd.
  2. Follow Hill up past the Zoo, bear right and turn left at the second stop sign onto Bunker Hill St.
  3. Take the next left at the Highland Ave. park entrance and look for the Venture Outdoors banner.
From Shadyside:
  1. Take 5th Ave. to S. Highland Ave.
  2. Take S. Highland through East Liberty to the end, where it enters the park.
  3. Look for the Venture Outdoors banner.

North Park

North Park (Swimming Pool/Pie Traynor Field area)

From Route 28:

  1. Take PA-28 to exit 5 Etna, PA-8 NORTH.
  2. Take PA-8 NORTH approx. 10 miles to Hampton Township.
  3. Turn left on Wildwood Road and continue to junction of Wildwood and Babcock Blvd.
  4. Turn left on Babcock Blvd. and go uphill.
  5. Turn left on Hemlock Dr., follow signs for Swimming Pool & Pie Traynor Field.
  6. Turn left toward the swimming pool and Pie Traynor Field.
  7. Bear right, follow signs to Swimming Pool, and park in the lot.

From McKnight Road North:

  1. Coming north on McKnight Rd., turn right on Peebles Road and continue to end.
  2. Turn left on Hemlock Dr.
  3. Turn right at sign for Pie Traynor Field/Swimming Pool.
  4. Follow signs to Swimming Pool and park in the lot.
Raccoon Creek State Park

To Park Office:
(Approximately 45 minutes driving time from Pittsburgh.)

  1. Get on the Parkway West (I-279 S) heading toward the Airport. (Route 60 West)
  2. When the parkway splits, stay on Route 60 toward the NEW airport. (Bear left goes to new airport, bear right goes to old airport).
  3. Go past the airport and take the first exit past the airport (Exit 7 - Clinton).
  4. At the end of the ramp, make a left, and go 1.1 miles to the intersection with Route 30.
  5. Turn right on Route 30 and go 2.5 miles to a spot where Route 30 swings slightly to the right and a different road bears to the left. Bear to the left (you are no longer on Rte. 30).
  6. Drive 6.2 miles to where the road ends in a T-intersection.
  7. Turn RIGHT onto Route 18 North.
  8. At 0.3 miles on Route 18 North you will see where Route 168 North veers left. Stay on Route 18 North.
  9. Drive 1.7 miles on Route 18 North and look for the Park Office on your left.
To Rec Hall:
(Approximately 45 minutes driving time from Pittsburgh.)
  1. Get on the Parkway West (I-279 S) heading toward the Airport. (Route 60 West)

  3. Go past the airport and take the first exit past the airport (Exit 7 - Clinton).
  4. At the end of the ramp, make a left, and go 1.1 miles to the intersection with Route 30.
  5. Turn right on Route 30 and go 2.5 miles to a spot where Route 30 swings slightly to the right and a different road bears to the left. Bear to the left (you are no longer on Rte. 30).
  6. Drive 6.2 miles to where the road ends in a T-intersection.
  7. Turn RIGHT onto Route 18 North.
  8. At 0.3 miles on Route 18 North you will see where Route 168 North veers left. Stay on Route 18 North.
  9. Drive 1.7 miles on Route 18 North and look for the Park Office on your left.
  10. Turn left into the Park Office.
  11. Drive straight up this road for approx. 3/4 mile and make the first left. (Do not veer right to Camp 2.)
  12. Follow the road across the creek, around to the right and up the hill a total of about 0.5 mile.
  13. Make the first left toward Camp 1 and the cabins. At the top of the road (200 yards) drive straight ahead and you will see the Recreation Hall and the parking area on your right.
To Route 168 Trail Head:
(Approximately 45 minutes driving time from Pittsburgh.)
  1. Get on the Parkway West (I-279 S) heading toward the Airport. (Route 60 West)
  2. When the parkway splits, stay on Route 60 toward the NEW airport. (Bear left goes to new airport, bear right goes to old airport).
  3. Go past the airport and take the first exit past the airport (Exit 7 - Clinton).
  4. At the end of the ramp, make a left, and go 1.1 mile to the intersection with Route 30.
  5. Turn right on Route 30 and go 2.5 miles to a spot where Rte. 30 swings slightly to the right and a different road bears to the left. Bear to the left (you are no longer on Rte. 30).
  6. Drive 6.2 miles to where the road ends in a T intersection.
  7. Turn right onto Rte. 18 North.
  8. Drive 0.3 miles on Rte. 18 North, then veer left onto Rte 168 North.
  9. Drive 3.6 miles on Rte 168 North and look for large dirt parking area on right. We walk from here.
To Wildflower Reserve:
(Approximately 40 minutes driving time from Pittsburgh.)
  1. Get on the Parkway West (I-279 S) heading toward the Airport. (Route 60 West)
  2. When the parkway splits, stay on Route 60 toward the NEW airport. (Bear left goes to new airport, bear right goes to old airport).
  3. Go past the airport and take the first exit past the airport (Exit 7 - Clinton).
  4. At the end of the ramp, make a left, and go 1.1 miles to the intersection with Route 30.
  5. Turn right on Route 30 and drive 4.7 miles and look for the entrance to the Wildflower Reserve on your right. (If you reach the entrance to the Park itself on your left, you have gone too far.)
  6. Drive 200 yards to the parking lot on your right and gather by the signboard at the far end of the parking lot.

Riverview Park (North Side)

From Downtown:
  1. Cross the 7th St. Bridge.
  2. Turn right on Stockton St. and continue around Allegheny Square.
  3. Turn left at Allegheny General Hospital.
  4. Turn right at the Garden Theater onto Federal Street.
  5. Continue up and over the top of Federal Street.
  6. Turn right onto Perrysville Ave. and continue to Riverview Park.
  7. Turn left onto Riverview Ave. and park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.

From points EAST:
  1. Take Route 376 West to 579 North.
  2. Take Crosstown Boulevard/579 North to 279 North.
  3. Take 279 North to first exit at Hazlett Street.
  4. Turn left onto East Street and continue through 2 stoplights at Mount Pleasant St. and Venture St.
  5. Turn LEFT at 3rd stoplight and follow East Street to the top of the hill.
  6. Turn LEFT at the stoplight on Perrysville Avenue.
  7. Turn RIGHT on Riverview Ave. into the park.
  8. Park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.

From points NORTH:
  1. Take Route 279 South to Venture Street exit.
  2. Turn RIGHT onto East Street.
  3. Turn LEFT and follow East Street to the top of the hill.
  4. Turn LEFT at the stoplight on Perrysville Avenue.
  5. Turn RIGHT on Riverview Ave. into the park.
  6. Park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.

From points NORTHEAST:
  1. Take Route 28 South to East Ohio Street Exit (Northside).
  2. At stoplight follow signs for I-279 North, turning RIGHT onto Madison Street.
  3. Pass entrance ramp to 279 and continue straight on Madison Street, which becomes East Street.
  4. Continue through 3 stop lights at Hazlett Street, Mount Pleasant St., and Venture St.
  5. Turn LEFT at 4th stoplight and follow East Street to the top of the hill.
  6. Turn LEFT at the stoplight on Perrysville Avenue.
  7. Turn RIGHT on Riverview Ave. into the park.
  8. Park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.

From points SOUTH:
  1. Go through Liberty Tunnel to Crosstown Boulevard/Rt. 579 North.
  2. Take Rt. 579 North to 279 North.
  3. Take 279 North to first exit at Hazlett Street.
  4. Turn left onto East Street and continue through 2 stoplights at Mount Pleasant St. and Venture St.
  5. Turn LEFT at 3rd stoplight and follow East Street to the top of the hill.
  6. Turn LEFT at the stoplight on Perrysville Avenue.
  7. Turn RIGHT on Riverview Ave. into the park.
  8. Park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.
From Sewickley and points WEST:
  1. Take Route 65 South towards Pittsburgh.
  2. After the McKees Rocks Bridge, follow signs for Route 19 North and Wexford. This will put you onto Beaver Avenue for a couple of blocks, then guide you to cross under the highway to once again head north.
  3. Continue following signs for Route 19 North (Marshall Avenue). Follow Marshall Avenue/Route 19 up hill, to T at Perrysville Avenue.
  4. Turn left on Perrysville Ave. and continue until you see the signs for Riverview Park, where you turn left and park near the end of this street before veering up to the Observatory.

 

Schenley Park
Schenley Park Visitor Center
Schenley Oval (and Disc/Frisbee Golf Course)

To Schenley Park Visitor Center (and Mountain Bike Rides):

  • From Downtown - Follow Forbes Avenue until Bigelow Blvd/Schenley Park Drive. Turn right, then left at the stop sign. Follow the road to the right and cross bridge to enter the park. Phipps Conservatory is on the right as you come to a Stop sign - the building across the street is the visitor center - you can find parking on either side of the street. Mountain bike rides meet at the George Westinghouse fountain/pond, which is ahead on the right.
  • From Oakland - Take Bigelow Boulevard past the Pitt Library (on right, Carnegie library to the left) and turn left at Stop sign onto Schenley Drive. Take Schenley Dr. across bridge into the park. At the first Stop sign, Phipps is on right and Schenley Visitors Center is straight ahead. Turn left and park on the street. Mountain bike rides meet at the George Westinghouse fountain/pond, which is ahead on the right.
  • From Parkway East (I-376) - Take the Oakland exit (#2), then turn right at sign for Boulevard of the Allies. Turn right on Blvd. of the Allies and continue across bridge into the Park. Take second right after the bridge, which swings you around and across the Panther Hollow Bridge. Turn right at Phipps Conservatory and the Visitor Center will be on your right.
  • From Parkway West (I-376) - Take Oakland exit (#2A) and bear right to stoplight at top of Bates Ave. Turn right on Boulevard of the Allies and continue across bridge into the Park. Take second right after the bridge, which swings you around and across the Panther Hollow Bridge. Turn right at Phipps Conservatory and the Visitor Center will be on your right.
To Schenley Oval (and Disc/Frisbee Golf Course):
  • From Parkway East (I-376) - Take the Oakland exit (#2), then turn right at sign for Boulevard of the Allies. Turn right on Blvd. of the Allies. Continue across the bridge into the Park and make the first right, which takes you up to the Oval/turnaround, where you can park.
  • From Parkway West (I-376) - Exit at Oakland and turn right at the top of Bates Ave. onto Blvd. of the Allies. Continue across the bridge into the Park and make the first right, which takes you up to the Oval/turnaround, where you can park.
  • From Squirrel Hill - Take Beacon St. into the park, bearing right onto Hobart Street. Turn left at the stoplight onto Greenfield Rd. and make a quick right onto Overlook Drive, which takes you up to the Oval/turnaround. Park there and look for the WPFI banner.
Settlers Cabin Park
  1. Take the Parkway West I-376 through Fort Pitt Tunnels to I-279 South.
  2. I-279 becomes US-22 WEST/US-30 WEST. Just follow signs toward AIRPORT.
  3. Drive approximately 7.5 miles and take the CAMPBELLS RUN ROAD exit.
  4. At bottom of exit ramp, turn LEFT onto Campbell's Run Road.
  5. Drive 0.1 mile and turn LEFT onto BOYCE RD. (Follow signs to Park)
  6. Drive 0.5 mile and turn RIGHT onto RIDGE RD.
  7. Drive 0.7 miles on Ridge Road, passing the swimming pool (which will be on your right), and look for the big sign announcing Settlers Cabin Park on your left.
  8. Turn at the FIRST LEFT immediately after the Settlers Cabin Park sign.
  9. Drive 0.1 mile and look for the Gilbert Love picnic area and shelter on your right. Park here and look for the WPFI banner.

Settler’s Cabin Park Thursday Mountain Bike Rambles

  1. Take the Parkway West I-376 through Fort Pitt Tunnels to I-279 South.
  2. I-279 becomes US-22 WEST/US-30 WEST. Just follow signs toward AIRPORT.
  3. Drive approximately 7.5 miles and take the CAMPBELL’S RUN ROAD exit.
  4. At bottom of exit ramp, turn LEFT onto Campbell’s Run Road.
  5. Drive 0.1 mile and turn LEFT onto BOYCE RD. (Follow signs to Park)
  6. Drive 0.5 mile and park in the lot for the new office building at the junction with RIDGE RD.

South Park

  1. Go through the Liberty Tunnels and take the 51 South Exit. (Be in the right lane through the tunnel).
  2. Go approximately 3-4 miles and turn Right on to 88.
  3. Go approx. 6-8 miles to the main entrance of the park.
  4. The skating rink parking lot is about 1/4-1/2 mile into the park from the 88/Corrigan drive intersection.
Southside Riverfront Park

From South:

  1. I- 279 N to I-376
  2. Exit I-376 East at Grant Street
  3. Continue straight until Forbes Avenue.
  4. Turn Right onto Forbes Avenue
  5. Turn Right onto 10th Street , which goes through the Armstrong Tunnel.
  6. Continue straight across 10th Street Bridge.
  7. Turn Left onto East Carson Street
  8. Turn Left onto 18th St.
  9. Continue into the park until final parking lot.

From Oakland:

  1. Take 5th Avenue heading toward City
  2. Turn Left onto Birmingham Bridge
  3. Turn Right onto East Carson
  4. Turn Right onto 18th Street
  5. Continue into the park until final parking lot.
From North:
  1. Take I-579 South
  2. Exit onto 6th / 7th Ave
  3. Continue straight on Ross St
  4. Turn Left onto Forbes Ave.
  5. Turn Right onto 10th St . , which goes through the Armstrong Tunnel.
  6. Turn Left onto Carson St.
  7. Turn Left onto 18th St.

From Downtown:

  1. Go on Forbes Avenue away from Downtown
  2. Turn right onto 10th Street, which goes through the Armstrong Tunnel.
  3. Left onto E. Carson St.
  4. Left onto 18th St
  5. Continue into the park until final parking lot.
South Side Park - Southside Slopes
  1. Heading toward Pittsburgh on Carson Street, turn left on 21st Street.
  2. Go though a series of stop signs (you'll pass the old Duquesne Brewery) and keep going up the hill to the end of the road until you come to the abandoned Neville Ice Rink (there is no longer a sign that says 'Neville').
  3. Meet at the South Side Ice Rink for evening nature hikes.

To Three Rivers Rowing Assoc. (TRRA) Millvale Boathouse:
Note: All Sea Kayaking now starts at Millvale.
From Rt. 28 North:

  1. Take exit 3 Millvale.
  2. Keep left off the ramp and go under Rt. 28 South overpass (the turnoff for the boathouse is at the bottom of this ramp).
  3. Take a quick left at the white sign for MILLVALE RIVER FRONT PARK. (This will be before the ramp leading back to Route 28 North).
  4. Cross railroad tracks and turn right after you go under the railroad overpass.
  5. The TRRA Boathouse is the last building on this road, so you will pass the Skate Park and the road works building first.
From Rt. 28 South (Pittsburgh):
  1. Take exit 3 Millvale.
  2. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp, at the white sign for MILLVALE RIVER FRONT PARK. (This will be before the ramp leading back to Route 28 North).
  3. Cross railroad tracks and turn right after you go under the railroad overpass.
  4. The TRRA Boathouse is the last building on this road, so you will pass the Skate Park and the road works building first.

Verona

Verona, Rivertowne Inn (for mt. bike rides)
  1. Take Rt. 28 North to Highland Park Bridge.
  2. Cross bridge in left lane.
  3. Follow off-ramp to 1st light on Allegheny River Blvd. and continue straight.
  4. Stay on the Blvd. approx. 5 miles through 2 stoplights.
  5. At the 3rd stoplight by the shopping plaza w/ Giant Eagle, turn left into the plaza.
  6. Bear right along the perimeter and pass the Giant Eagle out of the parking lot onto Jones St.
  7. Rivertowne Inn is about a block ahead, at the corner of Jones & Grant St., 500 Jones St 15147.

Washington’s Landing (Formerly known as Herr’s Island)

To Bike Rides:
From Rt. 28:
  1. Turn at the 31st Bridge.
  2. Take immediate right on to River Road and then immediate left onto Washington's Landing (A.K.A. Herr's Island).
  3. Turn left into first parking lot under the bridge.
From the Strip District:
  1. Cross the 31st Street Bridge.
  2. Turn left on to River Road (just before intersection with Rt. 28).
  3. Take immediate left onto Washington's Landing(A.K.A. Herr's Island).
  4. Turn left into first parking lot under the bridge.

To Three Rivers Rowing Assoc. (TRRA) Boathouse:

From Rt. 28:

  1. Turn at the 31st Bridge
  2. Take immediate right and immediate left onto Herr’s Island
  3. Follow street to the last building on the left, the TRRA Boathouse.

  2. Turn left before Rt. 28
  3. Take immediate left onto Herr’s Island.
